Marriages in India have witnessed a significant evolution in recent years, marked by a notable increase in divorce rates, particularly initiated by women. Traditionally, India boasted one of the lowest divorce rates globally at 1.1%. However, recent societal shifts have seen a significant rise in divorces, reflecting changing attitudes toward marriage and female agency.

Contrary to popular belief, we must understand that divorce isn't necessarily bad; it can be an important step toward personal freedom and emotional well-being. Addressing the root causes of marital problems is key to fostering healthier relationships and changing societal attitudes towards divorce in India.

Even though people are more aware of these issues, physical, sexual, and emotional abuse still happens a lot, making many want to leave bad relationships. According to the National Commission for Women (NCW), over 28,811 complaints of crimes against women, including domestic violence, were registered in 2023 alone.

Traditional gender roles, enforced by patriarchy, no longer fit with modern goals for equality. We reject the idea that women should only be in domestic roles and seek fair partnerships. But, changing these societal norms is challenging. Women's growing economic independence and education have also made us more willing to leave bad marriages.

There's a growing recognition that changes are needed. Men are starting to understand the importance of supporting their partners' independence and the value of fair and equal partnerships. However, many men still struggle with balancing traditional expectations with modern realities. This transition can be tough, but it's necessary for healthier and more respectful relationships.

Infidelity is also a big problem in marriages. Both husbands and wives might cheat, causing a lot of pain and breaking trust. The consequences of infidelity often lead to divorce.

Education and exposure have helped women see and deal with different marriage problems. Issues like neglect, indifference, and lack of support can strain relationships, showing the need for mutual understanding and compatibility. Arranged marriages, which are common in India, often have communication problems, making things worse. Misunderstandings about family, money, or raising children can lead to resentment and unhappiness.

In conclusion, the rise in divorce rates in India is a reflection of the evolving societal landscape, where traditional norms are being challenged and redefined. While the increase in divorces may seem alarming, but it signifies a move towards more equitable and respectful relationships.

Addressing the root causes of marital issues, promoting mutual understanding, and supporting personal freedom are essential for fostering healthier marriages in contemporary India.
